Leonardo Ramirez-Lopez
Head of Data Science · BUCHI Labortechnik · Switzerland
My work sits at the interface of spectroscopy, chemometrics, and applied machine learning, spanning data science and artificial intelligence across research and development, digital products, and business transformation.
I currently lead the Data Science department at BUCHI Labortechnik AG, where I work on machine-learning platforms, embedded AI systems, and analytics services for laboratory automation and industrial applications.
My background spans applied machine learning, chemometrics, spectroscopy, and environmental modelling, with experience in both academic and industrial settings. I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Tübingen (Germany), carried out postdoctoral research at ETH Zürich (Switzerland), and completed a Master’s in Business Analytics at Imperial College London (UK). I have also lived and worked in Colombia, Brazil, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland.
I recently published two research papers in Analytica Chimica Acta for spectral library modelling in spectroscopy: the first is about the development of libraries of models and the second one is about evolutionary subset selection for domain-adaptive calibration.
I have also written about why business education matters for scientists, and how it shapes the way I lead data science in industry.
